My career started in city planning, and that led to management consulting in Philadelphia and New York, focusing on communication issues. During that time, I began developing a methodology based on communication network analysis and cognitive mapping that would transform everyday spatial patterns of networks. I received manuscript awards from the American Real Estate Society for papers showing applications of the methodology. This methodology defines our distinctive competence.

My analyses have resulted in some of the highest damages awards in architectural copyright, in eight-digit premises liability awards, in recognizing substantial impairment of access, in the redesign of buildings and places, and in main street redevelopment plans leading to large property value increases.

I’ve been around construction since elementary school and worked in and taught architecture as a designer, project architect, and manager for 12 years at two small firms, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, IIT in Chicago, ASU in Phoenix, and the University of Colorado. I've made dozens of local, national, and international presentations, including keynote addresses; testified on Court TV; been interviewed on American Public Radio; and lectured on three continents on behavioral economics, decision-making, and judgment biases of real estate and design professionals.

In 2005, I became Head of the Real Estate Management and Development Group at Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and a few years later, Aldar Dean of Business at the Higher Colleges of Technology in the UAE. Periodically, I get involved in entrepreneurial ventures with and on the boards of start-up companies.

I was previously a board member of the American Institute of Economic Development, the City Club of Denver, the MIT Enterprise Forum of Colorado, and a trustee of the Denver Foundation for Architecture. I was an Academic Fellow of the Urban Land Institute and a Cass Gilbert Visiting Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

My degrees include a Bachelor of Science (Communications) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; a Master of Science (Architecture) (thesis distinction), The Bartlett School, University College London, London, England; and a Doctor of Technology in Built Environment (Higher Doctorate), Ulster University, Northern Ireland.
